Piscinas Beach, a breathtaking oasis among towering dunes

The stunning beach of Piscinas is surrounded by towering, ochre-yellow sand dunesโ€”among the tallest in Europeโ€”harmoniously shaped by the mistral wind. Over the centuries, the native vegetation has perfectly adapted to this dune environment. In this fragile and unique ecosystem, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the local wildlife is characterized by the Sardinian deer and the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), which finds this stretch of coast the perfect place to lay its eggs during the nights of June and July. The Piscinas area gently slopes from the surrounding hills down to the coastline, transitioning from rocky formations to the famous sand dunes. The Piscinas stream, which originates near Montevecchio, flows north of the Piscinas area. It is also fed by waters from the tunnels of abandoned mines, giving it a characteristic reddish hueโ€”which is why the stream is also known as the "Red River". The Naracauli stream, on the other hand, flows into the Piscinas area from the mining village of Naracauli. Among the vegetation, you can find juniper, mastic (Pistacia lentiscus), broom, and spurge. Near the Naracauli stream, there are tamarisks, reeds, and other shrubs typical of the garrigue. The beach of Piscinas, like much of the Costa Verde and the western coast of Sardinia where the sea is rarely calm, is a favorite destination for surfers, who can enjoy their sport thanks to the frequent long, high waves. How to get there There are two ways to reach the beach: either by going through Guspini and touring the mining area, or by going through Arbus and heading down towards Ingurtosu and then Piscinas. If you follow the signs from Guspini, the road is unpaved for about 10 km, but in return, you will enjoy breathtaking landscapes and the famous mines of the Arbus region. If you choose the route through Arbus, after about 6 km from the town, you will reach the small mining hamlet of Ingurtosu, and then continue on to Piscinas beach.
